CHAPTER NINE

That night—my opening night—the tent was filled. I was to do my act at eight o’clock right after the regular sideshow. That afternoon the Zampini Brothers sent several young men from the carnival into Naples with sandwich boards advertising little old me. Those who wished to stay after the sideshow and catch my act had to pay a small extra fee and, of course, had to be over twenty-one. The place was jammed. Everyone who worked for the carnival and could get away from the concessions had come to the tent—including Gianni and the sideshow people; Mario, Lena, Victor, Garibaldi, Bernadette and Poco were waiting to see me do my stuff.

I peaked out through the curtains and looked over the crowd. It unnerved me a bit to see Poco leaning near the edge of the stage with that strange, menacing look on his face. But I was determined to be a smash hit, not only for the Zampini Brothers, but for my own personal satisfaction. Zippo made the announcement and a hush fell over the audience. The music started and I entered through the drapes and did my thing.

I was well aware of Bernadette practically salivating as I took off my dress and Victor pushed his way forward to get a better view of me. As I bumped down the runway, I threw a candy to Lena, who caught it as easily as a fat frog catches an unwary fly. Poco squirmed through the mob and stood at the end of the runway. He made a grab for my ankle with his miniature hand and missed. I brought my heel down on the back of his hand. That tended to discourage him. When I was finished, there were cries of “More, More!” I knew then that I was going to have to work up a couple of encores for my act. Several men threw money on the stage and there were one or two wedding rings that bounced on the boards and rolled merrily toward my feet. I blew kisses to the audience and bowed low enough to give them their money’s worth. Always keep them clamoring for more. It was a show business motto and I intended to make it mine. When I went backstage, Poco was waiting for me, his infant’s face frozen in a mask of fury.

“You bitch!” he screamed in his little boy voice. “You hurt me! I’ll get you for that!”

I turned on him. “Look, you road show munchkin! Don’t give me any trouble! I’m here trying to do a good job. You mess me up and this little Snow White will see that there’s one less dwarf in the world. Now, get out of here! Go molest some Barbie dolls.”

He stomped off fuming and I knew that I had made an enemy, an enemy that could be potentially dangerous to me.

Aunt Sophia came rushing backstage and embraced me.

“Eve, my dear, you were beautiful. Sexy—a little naughty—but still beautiful. Just enough, not too much!”

“Thank you, Aunt Sophia.
